See Celebrity Author Bob Steele, Discuss Windsor's potential Casino!
Windsor -- Author and former U.S. Congressman Bob Steele will speak at the Double Tree in Windsor Locks on Wednesday evening, Wednesday, April 15th from 7pm to 9pm regarding the proposal to open a casino in the Windsor-Enfield area and the background to his book, The Curse: Big-Time Gambling’s Seduction of a Small New England Town.. The evening is being sponsored by Windsor businesswoman Laurel Hardy of Bespoke Wealth Management. The public is invited. He will be signing his novel for those who are interested after speaking.

The Curse is a fact-based novel set against the explosion of casino gambling in Connecticut during the 1990s, when two Indian tribes built the world’s two biggest casinos in the southeast corner of state. The story begins with the Pequot War in 1637 and then jumps 350 years as a Connecticut family becomes embroiled in a battle to stop a third casino that threatens the family’s town and ancestral home. WBZ Boston’s Dan Rea calls the novel “powerful” and Connecticut author Martin Shapiro describes it as “compelling and timely…a riveting story of history, money, and politics that will make you wonder where American is headed.”

The book comes at a time when the Northeast is becoming saturated with casinos, casino revenue is plummeting in Connecticut, and a coalition of legislators has introduced a bill to permit the tribal owners of Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun to build “convenience” casinos in the state to try to intercept Connecticut residents tempted to travel to planned or existing casinos in Springfield and New York to gamble.

A former CIA officer, Steele represented eastern Connecticut in Congress and was a nominee for governor. He subsequently had a lengthy career in financial services and was a director of numerous companies, including CME Group and the American Stock Exchange. After serving in Congress, he and his family lived for 21 years on the edge of the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation in Ledyard, giving him a front-row seat for watching arrival of Connecticut’s casinos and seeing their impact.

Come out to be informed by an upstanding, honorable citizen who’s seen the CT casinos’ impacts first hand!
