Windsor Art Center Artists Talk - Stanwyck E. Cromwell
Mr. Crowell will discuss his imagery, themes, and passion for bridging diverse communities. Free

Windsor, CT. The Windsor Art Center presents REFLECTIONS OF TIME: Celebrating 50 Years of Artmaking by Stanwyck E. Cromwell. This exhibition, which runs through October 29th, is a retrospective of the artworks by Mr. Cromwell, a Guyanese-born visual artist and Adjunct Art Professor, who has spent the vast amount of his adult life in the United States. This exhibition highlights a selection of paintings, drawings and a variety of mixed-media works, some dating back to his early artmaking days in Guyana, all shown together for the first time.

Despite his lengthy absence from his native country, his memories of Guyana are rich and abundant. A visual kaleidoscope of symbols from his exotic homeland is portrayed in his art and serves as a footnote to his artmaking practices. He has a rich palette and images from which to draw. Saturated colors pervade his art. He often uses wide noses and thick lips not as cultural stereotypes, but as emphasis on the natural beauty of African features, which Mr. Cromwell finds sculpturally strong, ruggedly handsome, and spiritually connected to his Guyanese heritage.
Some of his newer works are more multi-layered and sculpturally collaged with buttons, cowrie shells, and a few tools of his trade including palette knives. Cromwell’s work is a testimony to his adaptation and his growth pertaining to cultural diversity. He says, “Most of the symbols used in my work are visual metaphors, thus subject to individual interpretation based on the context in which they are applied.”
Regular hours: Thurs.: 6 – 8; Sat.: 10 to 4; Sun.: 11 to 4. Several events will complement the exhibition.
