Thursday, July 7 - First Company Governor's Foot Guard Band Sponsored by Kimberly Hall (see the full schedule) Organized in October 1771 when Connecticut was still a colony of England, the First Company Governor's Foot Guard of Hartford CT is the oldest military organization in continuous service in the United States, predating even the United States Marine Corps. This elite guard unit is the oldest unit in the Connecticut State Militia and was originally formed to protect and escort the Governor and General Assembly. Known in 1771 as simply the Governor’s Guard, the Hartford unit’s name was changed in 1775 to First Company, Governor's Guard when a second company was organized in New Haven. The Company name was changed for the final time in 1778 when the Governor’s Horse Guard was chartered, and from that time onward the Company has been known as the First Company, Governor's Foot Guard. Although the Company’s duties have become primarily ceremonial in nature, as an attached unit of the CT National Guard, the Company is still subject to be called out for service within the state should the need arise. Each summer the Company participates in drill and training exercises at the CT National Guard Camp in Niantic, CT. The familiar Grenadier uniform worn today by the Company is virtually unchanged from the original colonial uniform adopted in the late 1700s. The uniform was modeled from that of the venerable British regiment, the Coldstream Guards, personal bodyguards to Queen Charlotte. The Company also has available a summer uniform similar to the Coldstream Guards’ current, modern-day uniform. For more than two centuries, members of the First Company, Governor's Foot Guard have proudly served their country and the State of Connecticut, and will continue to do so in the centuries to come. |
