Tsukamoto began playing the five-string banjo when he was thirteen, and took up the guitar shortly after. While attending Osaka University, he was influenced by the South American musical and social movement, Nueva Cancion, played by musical legends such as Victor Jara and Violeta Parra. He received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in 2000 and came to the United States. Tsukamoto was the leader of the world fusion/Latin jazz group Interoceanico. Working with musicians from eight different countries, he released three critically praised CD’s between 2004 and 2006. The music is a cornucopia of lush harmonies, lyrical melodies and driving rhythms. Tsukamoto released his first solo guitar disc in 2011, appropriately entitled SOLO. “Hiroya Tsukamoto plays with fluid mastery, pristine tone, and great warmth," writes Celine Keating of Acoustic Magazine. Find his music at HiroyaTsukamoto.com. Tsukamoto has appeared at The New England Folk festival and The Blue Note in New York. He has performed with Esperanza Spalding, Marta Gomez, Kendrick Scott, Pete Kennedy and Dave Maxwell. Several of his compositions were nominated for songwriting awards. He is also the recipient of the Professional Music Achievement Award. Suggested donation is $15.00 at the door. For more information, call 860-688-2528 or visit www.windsorartcenter.org. |
