Digitize & preserver your WWI heirlooms
A century ago, in April of 1917, the United States entered what was called the Great War, now called World War I. Windsor Historical Society will open an exhibit of World War I advertising posters, photographs, equipment, letters and much more on March 22, 2017. We have wonderful collections to share! And we’d like to know what you have preserved in your trunks and attics from that long-ago war. Perhaps your great-grandfather served overseas and wrote letters from the battlefront or brought home battlefront souvenirs, carefully preserved. Perhaps your grandmother served as a Red Cross nurse and kept her uniform.  Perhaps your great-uncle worked in one of Connecticut’s many factories that generated gas masks, or buckles, or canteens for the war. Share their stories with us and bring them alive for a new generation.

On Saturday, February 11, 2017, (snow date: February 18) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Windsor Historical Society is partnering with the Connecticut State Library’s “Remembering World War I: Sharing History, Preserving Memories” project to offer a digitization day at Windsor Historical Society. Bring your family’s World War treasures to show us.  We’ll record your family’s information, and scan and photograph your artifacts. The digital images will become part of the Connecticut Digital Archives for all to see. If your family was living in Windsor during World War I, scans or loans of your family photographs, records, or artifacts could become part of Windsor Historical Society’s upcoming exhibition. But you do not have to have Windsor-based family collections to participate in this World War I Digitization Day. Our partners at the Connecticut State Library will accept anything from anywhere so long as it is World War I-related and the participant is a Connecticut resident.

Learn about the best ways to preserve your family treasures from preservation specialist Donia Conn.  Windsor Historical Society Curator Kristen Wands and Archivist Michelle Tom will also be available to answer your questions. And if you haven’t visited Windsor Historical Society before, here’s a great chance to see our museum.
