2 Fun Family Events during Presidents' Week at Windsor Historical Society!
On Monday, February 20th 2017 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (snow date: February 21, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.),  join us at the Windsor Historical Society’s Hands-On-History Learning Center and make your very own hand-dipped paraffin candle to take home.  Different colors for dipping make each candle unique.  The Hands-On-History Learning Center, where children can try on reproduction colonial clothing, try out a child-sized rope bed, or “milk” Flavia the cow, can be enjoyed at the same time. Also on view in the Learning Center is Layers of Home, an exhibition of artworks created by Windsor High School students inspired by Windsor’s historic architecture. When you’re finished candle-dipping and are looking for another fun family activity, craft your own model of a house or freeform artwork. Using the examples provided by the Windsor High School Pre-AP Art Students in their exhibition, families can use toothpicks and marshmallows to create their own three-dimensional art. Round out your time at the Society with a self-guided exploration of the completely hands-on, and kid-friendly, Strong-Howard House. Volunteers will be available to answer questions, and you’re encouraged to feel (and smell) your way around the Howard family’s home as if it were yours. Scavenger hunts are also available for both the Strong-Howard House and the Windsor history museum galleries – make sure to get your postcard after completing them! Cost for this program is $12 per family; or $6 per adult, $5 for seniors, $4 for children, and $3 for members. A parent or guardian must accompany their children.

Join us on Saturday, February 25th, 2017 at 10 AM for a special program on trains. Our Hands-On-History Learning Center will be transformed with model railroads and train-oriented play tables. Bob Bell in costume as the Railroad Baron leads the fun. Play with Lionel and G-scale sized trains, learn some secret train whistle codes and get your own whistle to take home. Make a paper engineer’s hat and play a piston game showing how a steam locomotive works. Learn how railroads got started and how locomotives and train cars changed over the years. This program is appropriate for families with pre-K through grade 3 children. Enrollment is limited, so be sure to make your reservation by February 24.  Just call 860-688-3813. COST: $6 adults, $5 seniors, $4 children, $3 members, $15 per family. For more information, contact the Society at 860/688-3813 or www.windsorhistoricalsociety.org. Snow date:  February 26, 2 PM to 3 PM.
