Sarah Margu: Child of the Amistad
Who was Sarah Margu? Join friends at Windsor Historical Society on Saturday, August 5 from 1 to 2 PM to find out as performing artist and storyteller Tammy Denease brings Sarah Margu to life through her vivid living history portrayal of this important 18th-century woman.

A native of Mendeland (now Sierre Leone), Sarah Margu was stolen from Africa as a child and enslaved along with 52 others aboard the schooner Amistad in 1839, an experience that would change her forever. Eventually gaining her freedom, Margu became the first African to graduate from college in America, graduating from Oberlin College in Ohio. You won’t want to miss this dynamic and important living history program!

Tammy Denease is the executive artistic director of the Hidden Women Stage Company where she writes, directs, and produces plays about Black women hidden in history. Born in Columbus, Mississippi, she spent countless hours with her great-grandmother and grandmother. Family tradition says that her great-grandmother, a former enslaved person, lived to be 125, and her grandmother lived to be 100. Both were known storytellers and passed this gift along to their granddaughter. Tammy also instructs children through stories of colonial history, health, medicine, slavery and national history, and serves as Outreach Director for the Connecticut Freedom Trail.
