| | | Join us on Sunday, November 6, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM for a “Business on Broad Street” bus tour of Windsor’s Town Center. The idea for this tour sprang from a suggestion that we incorporate 20th century businesses that once ringed the green. All summer and fall, historian Beverly Garvan has been combing city directories, telephone books, and searching through old photographs with Archivist Michelle Tom. Garvan has compiled information about 550 entrepreneurs who operated businesses near the green from the 18th through 20th centuries. Do you remember the Cozy Corner? Getting your skates sharpened on the grinding wheel of old Mr. Andrus’s blacksmith shop? John Zatti’s gas station? Beverly Garvan will provide perspective on how the Broad Street Green area developed over the centuries, sharing her most recent research and memories going back to the 1930’s. Bus driver Sterling Viets, whose memories go back to the 1950’s, just might chime in. And if someone on tour wants to share a brief memory of a business on Broad Street, we’ll pass the microphone around! Each participant will receive a packet of historic maps, photographs, and images from Windsor Historical Society collections to compare with the features they see as the tour progresses. Garvan’s document listing 20th century Windsor businesses will also be available as a handout. Spaces are limited! Reserve your spot by Friday, November 4 by calling 860-688-3813 or e-mailing info@windsorhistoricalsociety.org . The school bus will meet participants at the Society. Cost for the program is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors and students, and $10 for WHS members. For more information and to reserve your spot, call 860-688-3813 or visit windsorhistoricalsociety.org. |
