The Mythology Project Returns to the Windsor Art Center: World Premiere of a New Short Play!
– The Windsor Art Center is proud to present the second installment of The Mythology Project – a new short play. The inaugural Mythology Project premiered at the Art Center last summer and featured two original plays inspired by the Greek myths Persephone and the Underworld and Eros and Psyche. The Mythology Project II will follow in the first Project’s footsteps while exploring a new mythology -Norse mythology. Like last summer’s project, this year’s installment will continue to create fun, immersive theatre. As soon as audience members enter the gallery, they will step into the world of the Norse gods and heroes, mixing and mingling with the mythology’s epic characters.
“Fun” and “playful” are two words that director Amanda Pawlik uses to describe the production. “We cover several of the Norse myths in this play,” she explains, “And while there are certainly moments that are both epic and serious, we approach the storytelling with an overall sense of joy -we want the audience to feel connected to the characters and to feel that they are going on the adventures with them.” Specific stories that are presented in the play include the story of Brynhild, the youngest Valkyrie, Odin the Wanderer, the history of the gods and their preparations for the coming of Ragnarok. Loki the trickster god, and the mighty Thor round out the performance with tales of cunning and cross-dressing.
The play itself was created “from scratch” through a collaborative process called “devising.” An ensemble of actors came together with Pawlik and playwright Jackie Marcoux to improvise how to stage and tell the stories in the Norse myths. After several devising sessions, Marcoux then wrote the text, pulling from the initial sessions as inspiration. Marcoux is currently based in New Hampshire, but has had work produced in both Hartford and New York City.
The ensemble cast is made up of Michael C. Daly and Nicholas Hargrave of Windsor, Rodney Kluessendorf of New Britain, Jillian Landolina of East Granby, Casey McDougal of Salem, and Nicole Morin of Berlin. Hartford based artist, Noel G. Coonce provides the set design and Zoya Malik of Windsor is designing the costumes. The play will be performed in the gallery space at Windsor Art Center, 40 Mechanic St., Windsor, CT, August 25-27 at 8pm. There is a suggested donation of $15.
